AFDC publishes its book on freedom of thoughts expression
Tuesday, 02 February 2010 07:25
The Arab Foundation for Development & Citizenship has published a book titled “Freedom of Thought Expression: Between sovereignty and globalization”, the book is authored by Mr. Mujahid Ibrahim.
The book deals with the problem of sovereignty and Human Rights; one of the problems that raise fears in many countries towards implementation of the international standards of human rights in particular those relating to freedom of opinion and expression and freedom of information.
This subject gains its special importance due to the huge expansion in the sources of information available due to the technological development seen in recent years such as New Media, this has allowed individuals and groups to express themselves much more easily and away from traditional restrictions on the ability of publishing and broadcasting as well as limiting the individual to accessing what is published by others.
The book reviews freedom of opinion and expression in international treaties of human rights on the one hand, and restrictions set by these treaties on the other hand. The book also reviews freedom of opinion and expression in the Arab Charter of Human Rights as an example of what has been achieved by the official Arab institution in the field of Human Rights and in particular freedom of opinion and expression.
The book also addresses the subjects of democracy and the sovereignty of the state and the different visions and theories around it according to the different concepts of democracy on the one hand, and sovereignty of state on the other hand. The author also reviews the various theories in this area, which varied based on the political, economic, and historical background of the political theorists in this area.
Moreover the book tried to highlight the problematic relationship between sovereignty and globalisation through freedom of opinion and freedom of expression; taking the Arab World as a case study and reviewing the problems faced when copying the western experiences to Arab Countries and the possibilities of success and failure...
The Arab Foundation for Development & Citizenship is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to spread concepts of citizenship, democracy and human rights in the Arab World. This publication comes as a part of a series of publications for the Foundation in the studies of citizenship.
